Spain keeps on breaking tourism records, with the number of tourists visiting the European Union nation up 12 percent in the first six months of the year.

Spain has broken its own tourist number records each year for the past four years as economic and security concerns elsewhere lure visitors away from rival Mediterranean destinations.

The National Statistics Institute said Monday that 36.3 million tourists arrived January through June. Most — 8.6 million — came from Britain, an increase of 9.1 percent over the same period last year. German visitors were in second place, up 10 percent at 5.5 million.

The government said 75.3 million tourists visited Spain in 2016.

Tourism represents some 11 percent of Spain’s 1.2 trillion euro ($1.41 trillion) gross domestic product.

Spanish hoteliers are expecting a record number of foreign visitors this summer, hotel confederation Cehat said on Wednesday, in a boost for the economy.

Spain registered a record 75.5 million foreign visitors in 2016 as the economy rebounded from years in or near recession and as unrest in northern Africa and the Middle East led visitors to seek out safer travel options.

Cehat forecast a rise to 80 million visitors this year.

Tourism accounts for around 11 percent of Spain’s economic output and is a major contributor to employment levels.

Some 37 million foreign visitors are expected during the high season of May through to August, Cehat said, up by 2.5 million from last year.

“Expectations are up across all areas, in prices, nightly stays and profits,” general secretary of Cehat Ramon Estalella said during a conference by the confederation in Madrid.

Spain is revising its economic growth forecast for this year upward to 3 percent from 2.7 percent, a further sign of the country’s surging recovery.

Speaking Friday in Warsaw, Poland, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said that the latest estimate by the Spanish central bank that the economy grew 0.9 percent in the second quarter, up from 0.8 percent in the first quarter, was significant.

It was the second upward revision to growth so far this year. Rajoy said Spain would officially revise the figure on Monday.

Spain emerged from recession in late 2013 and is now one of the European Union’s fastest-growing economies although its unemployment rate of 19 percent remains the EU’s second-highest after Greece.

Enough wind energy is being generated in Spain to power more than 29 million homes every day, according to one of the country’s biggest renewable energy companies.

While Australia debates the future role of renewables after the blackout in South Australia, Spain is determined to remain one of the global leaders in the field.

Spanish firm Acciona gave ABC News access to its control centre in Pamplona where it monitors 9,500 wind turbines around the world on a minute-by-minute basis.

A large screen allows employees to zoom in on specific wind turbines — some up to 17,000 kilometres away in Australia — and determine if the blades are pitched perfectly or if maintenance is needed.

“The important thing is to predict and forecast what is going to happen,” the centre’s director Miguel Ezpeleta said.

‘It’s A Real Situation’

During the night in November last year, wind energy provided 70 per cent of Spain’s electricity needs.

A daytime record was reached in January 2015, when 54 per cent of electricity use was provided by wind.

“It’s incredible. Some years ago people would say we would be crazy people saying these kinds of things, just dreaming but today it’s a real situation,” Mr Ezpeleta said.

But he was adamant the peak of 70 per cent was not the limit.

“I think people are going to tell me we’re crazy but I’m pretty sure we’ll arrive at 100 per cent for one moment for sure,” Mr Ezpeleta said.

The European Union target for 2020 is for Spain to reach 20 per cent of all energy needs, including electricity, heating, cooling and transport using renewable energy.

It is currently at 17.4 per cent — just below that target.

Cradle of Renewable Energy

Every July, thousands of tourists come to Pamplona for the famous running of the bulls.

But the area is also renowned for being the Cradle of Renewable Energy.

It was here the power and possibilities of wind were recognised in the 1980s.

Spain is not rich in oil or gas and has very little coal, so it either imported the resources or began finding other ways to create energy.

Spain’s mix has been very broad. Nuclear power accounts for 20.9 per cent, while natural gas and coal are both just above 15 per cent each.

There is no talk of closing down Spain’s nuclear power stations, but they do want to decrease the amount spent importing fuel from elsewhere.

And that is where wind comes into the picture.

At the El Vedadillo wind farm, 60 kilometres south of Pamplona, the turbine blades spin slowly, casting shadows on the ground.

The nearest village, Falces, earns a third of its yearly budget from the surrounding wind farms.

Its Mayor Valentin Garcia said residents were happy to rely on renewable energy and he could not remember the last time there were any blackouts.

“There’s a very good perception of wind technology because of two reasons,” Mr Garcia said.

“One reason is the economical benefit for the town and the second is we are helping to produce cleaner energies.”

High Power Bills Remain

Critics said renewable energies had not brought down electricity prices in Spain, in fact some suggested they had increased as much as 60 per cent since 2006.

“Every day is getting more expensive. I don’t know if it’s because of the taxes or why,” Falces resident Maria Angeles Verjara said.

One argument is, while wind is cheap, there will always be the need for backups — because wind is unpredictable and keeping other power sources, like Spain’s nuclear power stations, operational is costly.

But Acciona executives disputed those criticisms and director for the Asia-Pacific region Javier Montes said countries should not be discouraged from setting high renewable energy targets.

“Properly managed, there should be no issues with that. The examples in Europe show that,” Mr Montes said.

“The one thing going in Spain’s favour is that the electrical system has been built with the goal of making it very reliable and able to take very heavy knocks with extreme weather events or major technical failures.”

More than 50 cave etchings thought to be around 14,500 years old have been found in the northern Spanish town of Lekeitio.

Bizkaia regional official Unai Rementeria announced the discovery in a press conference Thursday, saying the etchings were a “treasure of mankind,” and “of exceptional technical quality and visibility.” He said experts have praised the etchings as the “most spectacular” in the Iberian peninsula.

Among the figures carved into the stone surface are horses, bison, goats and, for the first time, at least two lions.

The region of Bizkaia neighbors the region of Cantabria, home to the famous Altamira cave paintings, Spain’s most prized prehistoric cave art site – also known as the Sistine Chapel of Paleolithic Art.

MADRID, Aug 25 – Spain’s economy grew strongly in the second quarter as consumer spending stayed robust and demand for exports rose, though there were signs that a vibrant investment climate may be starting to cool after months of political uncertainty.

An economic recovery has retained momentum through eight months without a functioning government, as the country has continued to notch up one of the fastest growth rates in the euro zone this year.

Quarter on quarter GDP growth reached 0.8 percent, keeping pace with the first quarter and up a tenth of a percentage point from a preliminary estimate, Thursday’s final data from national statistics agency INE showed.

Consumer spending grew 3.6 percent year on year as people who kept their jobs through a recession that ended in 2013 took advantage of better times to buy big-ticket goods like washing machines.

Exports of services also performed well, INE said, even outside the tourism sector which has been boosted by record numbers of visitors this summer.

Spain’s acting economy minister, Luis de Guindos, said he expected the economy would eventually be impacted by the lack of a government.

However “from what we can tell there is no slowdown in the third quarter, it will be similar to the second and first,” he told reporters.

After two inconclusive national elections in December and June, the spectre of a third looms.

Politicians last week inched closer to ending the impasse when the People’s Party of acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy agreed terms to negotiate a pact with a smaller rival, Ciudadanos.

If the agreement is sealed, Ciudadanos will back Rajoy in a parliamentary confidence vote on Aug. 31 on forming a government. But even then Rajoy would still be short of the majority he needs, raising the possibility of third ballot in December unless others also agree to back him or abstain.

CHALLENGING AUTUMN

While fallout for gross domestic product so far has been slight, the political deadlock has triggered concerns that companies might delay expansion plans.

A slowdown in manufacturers’ investment in equipment and machinery extended into the second quarter, the INE data showed, when it grew at 7.8 percent year-on-year against 9.3 percent in the previous three months and almost 11 percent in the last quarter of 2015.

Analysts from Barclays said they expected investment growth to continue to decelerate, hit by declining business confidence. However, they raised their 2016 growth forecast by 0.3 percentage points to 3.1 percent, citing strong exports.

In a sign of the possible impact on government investment, spending on public works contracts slumped by a fifth in the first quarter, separate data showed on Tuesday, as decisions on infrastructure projects like roads, ports and trains were deferred.

On an annual basis the economy grew by 3.2 percent in the second quarter, INE said – below the 3.4 percent growth rate of the first but in line with a preliminary estimate.

The acting government expects the economy to expand 2.9 percent this year – one of the fastest rates in the euro zone – though scrutiny is growing over whether that will be enough to reach deficit targets without spending cuts.

Gross debt rose to a record high 1.1 trillion euros ($1.24 trillion) in June, Bank of Spain data showed on Wednesday, which the economy ministry said was equivalent to 100.9 percent of national output – well above 2016 goals.

Further delays to forming a government would bring Spain up against the EU’s deadline of mid-October to submit a 2017 budget. Missing that would damage investor confidence and raise the possibility of sanctions.

“Spain is heading towards a challenging autumn as a late government formation would mean delays to the budget, the expenditure ceiling and the new path of deficit target approval,” the Barclays analysts said in a note.
