Finnish consumer and industry confidence rose in May from the previous month, data published on Monday showed.

Consumer confidence increased to a record high 24.1 points in May from 21.5 points in April, Statistics Finland (SF) said. The long-term average for the indicator is 11.9 points.

A gauge of industry confidence rose to +8 points from +4 points in April, the Confederation of Finnish Industries said in a separate statement. The long-term average is +1 point.

The Nordic member of the euro zone is recovering from a decade-long stagnation sparked among other things by a decline of Nokia’s former phone business, rigid labour markets and recession in neighbouring Russia.

Health ministers of the G20 leading economies, meeting for the first time on Saturday, agreed to work together to tackle issues such as a growing resistance to antibiotics and to start implementing national action plans by the end of 2018.

Germany, which holds the G20 presidency this year, said it was an “important breakthrough” that all nations had agreed to address the problem and work towards obligatory prescriptions for antibiotics.

Saying that globalisation caused infectious diseases to spread more quickly than previously, the 20 nations also pledged to strengthen health systems and improve their ability to react to pandemics and other health risks.

“By putting global health on the agenda of the G20 we affirm our role in strengthening the political support for existing initiatives and working to address the economic aspects of global health issues,” the communique said.

The results of the meeting will feed into a G20 leaders’ summit in Hamburg in July.

While the discovery of antibiotics has provided cures for many bacterial infections that had previously been lethal, over-prescription has led to the evolution of resistance strains of many bacteria.

An EU report last year found that newly resistant strains of bacteria were responsible for more than 25,000 deaths a year in the 28-member bloc alone.

Germany has argued that even having a discussion about it will help raise public awareness about the problem. The G20 also said they agreed to help improve access to affordable medicine in poorer countries.

The European Union has taken a big step toward clinching a deal with Chile on the international trade in organic food products.

The EU member states on Monday agreed to recognize the equivalence of each other’s organic product rules and regulations, making it easier for the trade of such products in each other’s markets.

The EU’s organic food production is growing and the deal will allow it to target the Chilean market better. At the same time, products such as Chilean organic wines will also find it easier to be recognized in Europe.

The European parliament still needs to give the deal its final approval but that is not expected to be problematic.

Turkish company Galata Lokum plans to invest 4 million marka ($2.2 million/2 million euro) in an organic farming project in Bosnia’s Federation, where it will employ 150 people, the entity’s government has said.

The Federation’s agriculture minister Semsudin Dedic met with the director of Galata Lokum’s Sarajevo-based subsidiary TGT d.o.o., Hasan Gulyuz, on Tuesday to discuss the company’s plans, the entity’s government said in a statement following the meeting.

The project, named Galata Garden, will be focused on greenhouse organic production of lettuce, cherry tomatoes and strawberries, which will be exported to the region and the EU.

The company is currently looking for a land plot suitable for this kind of production, the government said.

“Organic production is a very promising sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has comparative advantages such as fertile land and water wealth”, Dedic explained. “There will always be a demand for these products on the EU market”.

The Federation is one of two entities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The other is the Serb Republic.

Wild Bluebells form a carpet in the Hallerbos in Halle near Brussels

Wild Bluebells, which bloom around mid-April, form carpet in the Hallerbos, also known as ‘The Blue Forest’, in Halle near Brussels, Belgium April 19, 2017. Photo: REUTERS/Francois Lenoir

Each spring, the ground of the forest Hallerbos trades in its brown and green hues for vibrant blue, when a burst of bluebell flowers bloom.

The bluebells are at their height in mid-April, but the fervent bloom lasts only seven to 10 days. Afterwards, leaves emerge in the beech trees above, blocking sunlight from reaching the flowers below. Visitors then have to wait another year to catch a glimpse of these wild flowers.

The protected forest, located south of Brussels near the town of Halle, draws locals and tourists to witness a landscape that looks plucked from a fairy tale.

Local student Violette Yernaux came for her first time to see the flowers, walk through nature and relax.

“They are all together like a carpet. It’s so pretty,” Yernaux said.

France has issued a record 7 billion euros ($7.5 billion) in so-called green treasury bonds, a boost to efforts to generate investment in clean energy.

The French government celebrated the higher than expected demand for Tuesday’s bond issue. President Francois Hollande called on others to follow France’s example.

The 22-year bonds that will go exclusively toward green energy spending were sold to banks, insurers and other institutional investors at a 1.75 percent interest rate, comparable to classic government bonds for the same period.

Other countries and funds have experimented with green bonds, but France’s issue Tuesday was exceptional in its size and duration.

Hollande’s government has championed green bonds since hosting the 2015 Paris Agreement, which aims to fight global warming by reducing carbon emissions and investing in renewable energy.

Industries across the euro zone cranked up output in November and Germany ended the year with its strongest growth in five years, data showed on Thursday, pointing to an economic spurt that may be arriving earlier than some ECB policymakers expect.

Euro zone industrial output in the 19-country currency bloc surged 1.5 percent on the month and 3.2 percent year-on-year as firms stepped up production before Christmas. Both figures were far better than expected.

That gelled with a surprisingly large increase in Italian industrial production, also reported on Thursday, and similarly robust numbers earlier this month from France.

The German statistics office, meanwhile, estimated growth in the euro zone largest economy was around 0.5 percent for the fourth quarter and expanded by 1.9 percent in 2016, the strongest rate in five years.

Economists said these figures added to the evidence that euro zone gross domestic product will have picked up in the last quarter of last year.

The numbers are also relatively unexpected. Indeed, investment bank Citi ranked the euro zone at the top of its Economic Surprise Index at year-end, higher even than the rating for Britain’s unforseen post-Brexit performance.

The strong rise of industrial output “reinforces our belief that euro zone GDP growth could well have reached 0.5 percent quarter-on-quarter in the fourth quarter of 2016,” said Howard Archer, economist at IHS Global Insight.

Euro zone GDP grew a modest 0.3 percent in second and third quarter of last year, after a 0.5 percent rise in the first quarter.

Thursday’s figures add to a jump in the bloc’s economic sentiment which in December reached its strongest level since March 2011.

Euro zone consumer confidence also hit a 20-month high in December and has been rising for four consecutive months, European Commission’s estimates showed.

Monthly retail sales in the bloc did fall by 0.4 percent in November but only after a rise by 1.4 percent in October, by far the largest in years.

CAUTION

The surprising burst in economic activity may fire up criticism from economists and politicians in countries such as Germany that the European Central Bank is hanging on too long to its ultra-easy monetary policy, including asset purchasing.

The ECB, however, remains cautious about the outlook and will need sustained evidence before it moves.

Indeed, the improved outlook for the last quarter of the year may however not carry over to 2017 in part because it brings with it an increase in prices.

“We expect rising inflation to weigh on consumer spending growth, causing overall GDP growth to slow in 2017,” Jack Allen of Capital Economics said.

Euro zone consumer inflation in December was 1.1 percent, the highest level since September 2013, as oil prices are going up. It remains under the roughly 2 percent target sought by the ECB, however.

A Reuters poll of over 65 economists released on Thursday showed little change in forecasts for euro zone growth and inflation with respondents citing uncertainty from rising protectionist sentiments after the Brexit vote last June and Donald Drumpf’s U.S. election win.

In addition, the November euro zone industrial output data confirmed caution is still prevailing among firms, as political uncertainty over the coming months restrains investment.

The monthly output rose strongly for non-durable consumer goods, such as clothing or foodstuff, a sign that companies were betting on more consumption ahead of the Christmas shopping.

Production grew markedly on the month also for intermediate goods and energy, but it rose only slightly for capital goods, like machineries, a sign of only limited appetite for long-term investment.

Output of durable goods, such as cars or refrigerators, was the only component of the indicator to record a drop, by 0.1 percent on the month, confirming firms’ cautious approach as consumers were less keen to purchase more expensive items.

French consumer confidence for December stood at a nine-year high, the official INSEE statistics agency said, as unemployment fears receded slightly while households also felt more confident about their personal finances.

The December reading for consumer confidence came in at 99 points – stable compared to a revised 99 points for November, up from 98 previously. The two new readings were the highest since October 2007, INSEE said on Wednesday.

The index, which is not closely correlated to consumer spending trends, hit an all-time low in May and June 2013 at 79. The highest level since the survey was conducted on a monthly basis was 125 in January 2001.

The Wider Image: Visiting Santa in Lapland

At Santa Claus’ Lapland home in Finland, his helpers sort out piles of letters from around the world, each detailing children’s requests for this Christmas.

In English, Italian or other languages, youngsters’ handwriting adorn the envelopes addressed to Father Christmas, some decorated with colourful hearts and stars.

Letters from around the world are stored at the Santa Claus’ Post Office in the Arctic Circle near Rovaniemi, Finland

As the holiday nears, every day is busy for Santa’s team in Rovaniemi, which calls itself his official hometown, near the Arctic Circle.

“Santa Claus is getting more and more popular, he receives about half a million letters every year from all around the world,” Elina, who works as a postal elf, said.

“We are busy here in Santa Claus’ main post office at the Arctic Circle to help him open all the letters and get all the wishes ready for Christmas.”

A board in the post office says Santa can get some 32,000 letters a day at Christmas time. Last year, around 500,000 letters arrived. China, Poland, Italy, Britain, Finland, Japan and Russia top the list of senders.

Thousands of visitors come to see the Rovaniemi Santa attraction each year ahead of Christmas, meeting the man himself, his reindeer and enjoying the magical scenery.

With just a few hours of light at this time of year, they make the most of sleigh rides among the snow-covered trees during the day.

Lapland tourism is a rare bright spot in Finnish economy, which is struggling to recover from a long stagnation. Traveling to Lapland increased 10 percent from January to October to more than 2 million overnight stays, and the number is expected to hit a new record in the full year.

“Another year is coming to its end and it has been a turbulent year with many big problems but also many very good things,” Santa said in his Christmas message.

“Now as Christmas is coming close, reach out for those who need a helping hand, do it with compassion – that’s the real Christmas spirit.”

Gabor Daroczi, director of Romaversitas foundation, installs a solar panel that will generate electricity to light the home of a Roma family in Bicske

Gabor Daroczi, director of Romaversitas Foundation, installs a solar panel that will generate electricity to light the home of a Roma family in Bicske, Hungary, December 15, 2016.

For Karoly Nemeth, a Roma man who lives with his family in a town just outside Budapest, having electricity in his home is not always guaranteed.

His house is on the grid but the family has a card-operated meter and towards the end of the month, the pre-paid card often runs out.

Nemeth, 42, who has side jobs in construction, lives with his wife, two daughters and son on a monthly income of about 90,000 forints ($300).

With the help of Hungary’s Romaversitas Foundation, an NGO, his home has now been equipped with a solar panel.

The electricity generated is stored in a car battery, and solar-charged LED strips attached to a piece of wood light their home in the dim, cold winter evening.

The program, called “Light bringers”, has so far helped 40 families in various parts of Hungary.

“I hope we will save 2,000-3,000 forints this way, and we will buy something for the girls for Christmas,” Nemeth says, sitting in his small kitchen heated by a wood-fired stove.

Gabor Daroczi, director of Romaversitas, which helps Roma students from poor families get a college degree, says access to electricity is a big problem for hundreds of thousands of Roma living in poor villages. They are often cut off from the grid as they are unable to pay their bills and fines.

“There is a family we go to in one to two months in Baks (a village nearby) where there is a home without electricity for six years and they use candles,” Daroczi said.

Installing the solar-charged system costs about $100 for each home.
